Zog is the keenest dragon in school, but also the one most likely to crash, stumble or set himself on fire, and that combination makes him instantly lovable. Julia Donaldson’s rhyme gives the story bounce and humour, while Axel Scheffler’s illustrations add plenty of warmth and comic detail.
What lifts the book above simple silliness is its generosity. Under the jokes is a story about trying hard, being helped along the way and discovering that bravery may not look exactly as expected.
It is a lively, reassuring picture book that works beautifully for reading aloud and returning to often.
